How to Apply a Wall Sticker

Decorating with wall stickers can really brighten up your area and is a great way to personalise your space. In this article, we’ll give your step-by-step instructions on how to apply a wall sticker.

To apply the wall sticker, you’ll have to clean the wall, measure, apply it to, and finally, enjoy your space. And if you want to get creative, you can customise and create your own wall sticker to make it unique!

You’ll want to be careful of bubbles when applying any wall stickers, the larger the sticker, the easier to get trapped air bubbles. Luckily, with the right technique, you shouldn’t have any issues.

Before you get started, make sure you have a damp cloth, measuring tape and a leveller  if you feel it’s necessary. Let’s dive in!

Application Steps

Applying wall stickers and decals can be very easy. But if you do not know what you are doing, the process can feel a little tedious and deliver sub-optimal results. To avoid that, follow the below steps for a perfect application:

Clean the Wall

Decide where your sticker will be displayed. Once you’ve chosen your spot, clean the wall.

Carefully remove any collected dust or debris; dust particles can prevent the adhesive from sticking or cause the sticker to bubble up. Be sure the wall is fully dry before you apply anything.

Measure

Measure the size of the sticker and the surface area you want it to cover using a ruler. If you want to take it an extra step to see what your final sticker will look like on the wall, you can use painter’s tape to tape up the area where the decal will be placed. This may help you visualise it before actually putting anything up.

Mark and Level

Found your perfect spot? Then grab a pencil to mark the space. Depending on the sticker shape, you might find it helpful to draw some lines using a leveler to ensure your sticker will be placed evenly.

Peel and Apply

It is time to apply your sticker! Start by peeling the backing paper off your sticker. This reveals the adhesive layer. If you are dealing with a larger sticker, we recommend only peeling part of the backing paper.

Why? Because your stickers come with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. That means as soon as they experience pressure, the adhesive will begin to bond with the surface. To avoid unwanted sticking, peel the backing paper as you apply your sticker to the wall.

Once you are done, you can smooth out any bubbles with something flat, like a credit card or even the side of a small book. Press down to ensure the sticker will stay and won’t fall off the wall.

Enjoy

This is the easiest step of all–enjoy your new artwork!

More Do’s and Don’ts for Wall Decal Application

Here are a few more don’ts to follow when you’re applying your wall sticker:

Direct Sunlight and Air Vents

Thanks to the UV protection we use, our wall stickers can be applied in direct sunlight, but you will want to avoid putting your decal under or above an air vent. The heat could cause it to peel off or warp.

Don’t Apply on Days With High Humidity

Try to put your wall decal up on a low-humidity and non-rainy day. Rain and humidity can affect how the adhesive sticks to the wall.

Don’t Peel Off the Sticker Backing Until You’re Ready

It might be tempting to put your sticker up as you receive it, but wait until you’re set up and ready. Make sure you know exactly where you’re going to put the sticker when you remove the backing.
